Before surveying specific approaches, it is important to stress that, although earlier Christians struggled with many of these same issues, the modern approach to theodicy owes its origins to the seventeenth- century development known as the Enlightenment. Prior to the Enlightenment, Christian faith accepted evil as a component of human existence and thus the focus was on how to live faithfully in the light of such reality. With the growing Enlightenment perception of the world as a rational and highly ordered place, the need to make Christian faith intelligible within that world became critical.

It functions as a warning signal that something is wrong. As such, pain is potentially beneficial.
